Vocabulary diversity in AI vs. human writing.
Type-Token Ratio, transition word overuse, and how to improve vocabulary diversity when editing AI drafts.
The diversity of word choices in a piece of writing is one of the measurable differences between skilled human writing and typical AI output. Understanding how to think about vocabulary helps both with editing AI drafts and with developing your own writing.
Type-Token Ratio (TTR)
A simple metric for vocabulary diversity is the Type-Token Ratio: the number of unique words (types) divided by the total number of words (tokens). A higher ratio suggests more varied vocabulary.
AI-generated text does not necessarily have a low TTR overall, because it covers a broad vocabulary. However, within specific semantic categories — especially transitions and connectives — AI text shows significantly lower diversity than human writing. It uses a smaller set of connector words more often.
Illustrative observation
In a typical 500-word AI-generated text, you might see the word “Moreover” used 4–6 times, “Additionally” 3–4 times, and “Furthermore” 2–3 times. In a 500-word human-written text of similar formality, these three transition words combined might appear 1–3 times total. This is not a scientific study — it is a qualitative pattern observed through repeated analysis of AI output, and your results will vary by model and prompt.
Why variety in word choice matters
Vocabulary variety signals two things to a reader: first, that the writer has a broad command of language; second, that the writer made deliberate choices rather than relying on default expressions. Both signal authenticity and competence.
When the same connector word appears multiple times in a short text, readers consciously or unconsciously notice the repetition. It disrupts reading flow and creates a sense of mechanical production.
How to improve vocabulary diversity when editing AI text
- Identify the most frequent content words in the output and check if they are overused.
- Look specifically at transition words — replace each one with a different alternative.
- Consider whether some transitions are needed at all; removing them often improves readability.
- Read each paragraph aloud. Repeated words are much more obvious when heard than when read silently.
