Understanding Detection Profiles & Heuristics

AI detectors evaluate statistical regularities in writing. The four signals below describe what each metric measures:

Vocabulary variety

Evaluates lexical predictability. Large language models favor statistically common words and repetitive transition markers. Higher perplexity signals more diverse vocabulary.

Sentence-length variation

Evaluates sentence length consistency. Human writers naturally mix short, punchy sentences with complex clauses (burstiness), whereas automated text tends toward uniform length.

Repeated phrasing

Evaluates repetitive clause structures, formulaic opening phrases, and predictable concluding transitions common across generative models.

Phrase predictability

Estimates the likelihood that individual words follow the default transition pathways typically chosen by standard auto-regressive transformers.

How to interpret your Estimated AI Score

AI scores represent an estimated probability based on language heuristics:

  • 70% - 99% (High Predictability): Text features uniform sentence lengths, frequent cliché transitions, and highly predictable word choices. Rewriting to vary rhythm is suggested.
  • 30% - 70% (Mixed Indicators): Contains a blend of natural phrasing and machine-like predictability. Common in heavily edited AI drafts.
  • 0% - 30% (Natural Rhythm): Exhibits strong variation in sentence length and varied vocabulary choices characteristic of human writing.

Important Limitation

No detector—local or commercial—is 100% reliable. Detection tools frequently produce false positives (flagging human writing) and false negatives. Always use these tools as guides for improving readability, not as definitive proof of authorship.
