How to edit AI-assisted writing effectively.
A six-step process for editing AI drafts: from reading the whole draft to checking facts, removing clichés and adding your own voice.
AI tools are useful for generating first drafts quickly. But using a first draft as a final product — without significant editing — typically produces content that reads mechanically and lacks genuine perspective. Here is a practical editing process.
Step 1: Read the whole draft before touching anything
Resist the urge to start editing the first paragraph immediately. Read the entire output first to understand its structure, identify repeated problems, and assess how much of the content is worth keeping. Sometimes large sections need to be rewritten or removed, not polished.
Step 2: Check the facts
AI language models can state incorrect facts confidently. Before editing prose style, verify that factual claims are accurate. This is especially important for dates, statistics, names, and any claim that can be checked. No amount of good writing compensates for incorrect information.
Step 3: Remove AI clichés
Scan for overused AI phrases and either remove or replace them. Look specifically for:
- Opening sentences that start with “In today’s world” or “In recent years”
- Transition words at the start of consecutive sentences (“Moreover”, “Furthermore”, “Additionally”)
- Filler phrases (“it is important to note that”, “it is worth mentioning that”)
- Overused adjectives (“comprehensive”, “robust”, “pivotal”, “seamless”)
- Closing summaries that merely restate the introduction
Step 4: Add your own perspective
AI generates generic, balanced content by default. Your editing pass should add what AI cannot: your specific experience, actual opinions, personal examples, and distinctive voice. This is what makes content genuinely useful to readers rather than generically correct.
Step 5: Vary sentence structure
AI output tends to have uniform sentence lengths. During editing, deliberately break long sentences into short ones, and occasionally combine short sentences into more complex ones. Read the result aloud — rhythm problems are much easier to hear than to see.
Step 6: Final check
Before publishing, check: Does the content provide genuine value to the reader? Is it accurate? Does it sound like a real person wrote it? Would you be comfortable putting your name on it? If yes to all four, it is ready.
